NURSE EDITH LOUISA CAVELL.

EDITH LOUISA CAVELL.

On the first of July 1770, 'our' Richard married Lucy Cavell in the Parish of Egloshayle in Cornwall, she of a well known Cornish Family.

One knows that Edith Louisa Cavell was born at Swardeston in Norfolk on December 4th 1865. A daughter of Louisa Sophia Cavell and her husband Frederick. The latter a clergyman. What I would like to know is whence his family came prior to Norfolk and his earlier Curacy, for lacking such knowledge one is minded to embroider the known facts, if only on the basis that I have a rather austere undated letter , seemingly written and signed by Edith Cavell to a member of our family. It relates to a birth of my own father's generation. One has a suspicion that the recipient of the letter was maybe a cousin of Edith's. It is just that the letter and the Cavell name together, suggest such to be a probability. Does anyone know of Edith's ancestry, for even the Cavell family would be interested to have such detail, for many others claim kinship?

Coincidence is a fine thing, but the afore mentioned Richard's Uncle Thomas, had by his second marriage a son called Joseph, who emigrated to Canada, and his progeny did rather well there. One of Joseph's descendants was Cicily Jane Georgiana Fane Pope RRC. born January 1st 1862, she too became famed , being the nurse who founded the Canadian Army's Nursing Service, and who was at some time Matron of the Red Cross Hospital at Taplow. Though Georgiana wasn't of Cavell descent she was related to Lucy Cavell's husband Richard. Coincidence or not three years ago the Canadian Government issued a commemorative coin to honour Georgiana, whilst this year The Royal Mint similarly honoured Edith Cavell who has everybody's respect this weekend.

Further complaint re Bt. Broadband and too of their side kick Plus Net.

This article on Bt. In today's Daily Mail had 1.1 thousand comments, most disfavouring Bt. by early this afternoon, at which point the comment counter seemingly failed.

Bt. Broadband, Had I seen this article and its appended comments a month ago I would not have touched Bt broadband with a Barge Pole.

However having then received not only the one but two personally addressed offers through the post*, I contacted the telephone number provided and spoke with a lady who imparted the thrilling news that ' I was lucky ' for I could have a hub 5 infinity connection. I did suggest to her that as our computer was some two miles away from their shiny new junction box, the prospect of the speeds suggested was unlikely. However what I thought had been agreed was that on paying a thirty five pound infinity connection charge and a delivery charge of £6.95, ie £41.95 together. Such speed would be mine too.

*
Because I wanted unlimited Broadband and free inland telephone calls at all times, neither postal offer had been applicable to me, though each was the bait that enticed me to Bt.

Seemingly at a cost of £32.29 per month. I could not only have the high speed connection but too the unlimited Broadband and telephone calls, all was to be mine on the 28th July 2015. Such excitement, such expectation, such disappointment that all we had on 28th July was the new hub, and the continued usage of our pre existing telephone connection. Alas we went without until an 'Open Reach' engineer spent several hours up and down telephone poles between here an the afore mentioned junction box. He did his best but left us with a speed between 12/13mbs. That of course was a great improvement on the 1.1 to 1.97 download and the between 0.62mbs and 0.78 mbs upload we'd been getting for a year from Plus Net , well until circa lunch time on July 8th. Thereon Plus net Broadband failed terminally, the telephone connection itself failing for but a day. There was no attempt to restore my broadband. So had none between Lunchtime on July 8th. And the start of August. Once the Bt. Broadband settled it consistently avails me of 13.7 Mbs. Unfortunately the Plus Net failure left me ignorant of the death and funeral arrangements of an old friend, so I could not attend.

Bt.'s 13.7mbs suits me well enough , but doesn't if I am paying for a minimum of 35Mbs. having paid for an Infinity connection and delivery charge itself costing £41.95. (By the way even those inapplicable half price offers suggested any ordinary connection would deliver circa 17mb.s)

Further more one was afterwards advised that I did not have unlimited broadband nor any time telephone calls, for I heard was I had used up much of my broadband allowance, and anymore would have to be purchased. I am sorry Bt. but such could not have been the case. Curiously enough you tried that one on one of my daughters. She being a daughter of mine quite rightly told you she would not be paying you for any extra on the basis that she and her husband were away from their empty Apartment at the time.

Having sent letters to not only The Managing Director of Bt, but too to their Managing Director of customer relations, I naively expected a reply, but had none, though this last week two people phoned me concerning my letter of complaint dated at the end of July. Thus it was I was able to tell my new woes to a helpful lady, who said that I had obviously been mis-sold my package, but she did assure me that the original arrangement was that I have unlimited Broadband {via my shiny new hub?}and anytime inland telephone calls, for a total of £32.29 per month including line rental. That was of course slightly more than I used to pay Plus net for their inadequate service, so one expected to pay more for my new twenty first century connection, had not Bt defaulted on its delivery. The lady has promised to ring again this coming Friday.

I'm not sure how pleased she will be to hear that half an hour after our conversation, an email arrived from Bt. Thanking me for my new order, and that I might be expected to be connected up at midnight on the 24th August, on a contract costing £43.29 pcm.

SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WITH Bt. Possibly it should sack both its Managing Director and its Managing Director of Customer services.

Bt. Infinity hub. Debacle.

Further to my last comment, the plot has thickened. Having set up a new account for unlimited Broadband with the free anytime extension for inland telephone calls commencing 28th July 2015, it didn't actually arrive then, however after a very helpful Bt. Engineer spent some three to four hours up and down various telephone poles that stretch between my house and the junction box two miles from it, I did receive over 12mb. Having taken up a special offer from Bt. There was a discount of eight pounds involved  each month for the first year so producing a monthly bill of £32.29. All of which left me a reasonably happy bunny.

UNTIL

Less than three weeks later I received an  email advising me that I had already used up much of my first months download allowance.* Naturally enough one made complaints via letters to not only the Managing Director of Bt. but too to one Libby Barr who is described as the Managing Director of Sales and Servicing. In all fairness there is no telling whether any of the three letters sent to her or the two sent to The Managing Director of Bt were received, for none of my letters is acknowledged.

HOWEVER
A couple of days ago a very helpful lady phoned me once, who after speaking with me, spoke with her supervisor, and then re-telephoned me again, promising to telephone again next Friday. This lady confirmed that that the terms of agreement of 28th July were entirely correct. Any time phone calls and unlimited broadband, all for the agreed sum. Quite cheered me to hear such confirmation, until within the half hour one received an email from Bt. thanking me for my order for Unlimited Broadband and telephone calls etc. This would commence at Midnight on the 24th August, this to cost £43.29 a month and run for all of 12 months. Ah but guess what , apparently my download speed was to be 39mb and my upload 9 Mb or failing all that the lowest speed I was to expect from Bt. Infinity would be 35Mb. You may imagine the excitement of such a proposition, and too my disappointment to discover at 12.38 pm on 25.08.2015, that my broadband speed today was as it was yesterday 13.3 Mb. which seemingly translates as 12.6 Mb. down and 1.11Mb up.

Thus it was I spoke to a man called Ab*** seemingly on the sub continent, and complained to him, but nothing came of my doing so, nor did I expect it would, however it seemed right that one again followed orders. The first time I phoned the sub continent on this sad affair I was left hanging-on for circa an half hour.

* reference to the above I suggest that there might be something wrong with the BT metering system for there was no way I could have used up the alleged download limit as suggested. Could there be a miss-wired connection en route?

Quite clearly Bt. Infinity broadband is disappointing .Though far better than my previous ISP's of Talk Talk, and Plus net. May be their poor performance was the fault of Open Reach's copper cables. But then one paid either of them less than one now pays Bt.

I have no idea how  to run an Internet Service Provider, however can recommend others who might make a better job of Bt. Broadband.

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS WHICH FAIL TO DELIVER.

May I float the idea that Government might legislate that ISP's charges should diminish the lower the speed provided. Its exceedingly simple for the IS provider to measure that on an hour by hour basis. But even more to the point that an ISP should not be allowed to claim the speed that 10% of its clients get as the Norm, for such isn't the case. To me it smacks of underhandedness. My case is no different from that of my neighbours. August 2015.

Maybe all who are failing to get the speed they are paying for might complain to their Member of Parliament. JBP 11.8.15
